Primetime on Apple TV: Why Pattinson’s Thriller Is Climbing the Charts

One day after landing on premium video-on-demand, A24’s thriller Primetime is already behaving like a streaming smash. Apple TV’s digital storefront has the film inside its top five, and early U.S. movie rankings place it roughly fourth among the most-watched titles. For a mid-budget thriller that spent only a few weeks in theaters, that is the kind of day-one bounce studios dream about when they sketch a PVOD plan.

Directed by Lance Oppenheim, the film casts Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, the television journalist whose catchphrase once haunted living rooms and later internet culture. It is neither a documentary remake nor a tabloid roast; it plays more like a pressure-cooker drama about spectacle, accountability and the strange afterlife of a media figure who became a meme. The supporting cast mixes dramatic weight with unexpected comic texture — Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers and Anna Faris among them — which helps a weeknight browser click instead of scrolling past.

In our directory, Primetime is a neat case study in how A24 moves a specialty hit from cinema to living room. Theatrically the film took in about $57 million against a reported $14 million budget; critics have been kind, with Rotten Tomatoes sitting around 86 percent. Hansen himself has said he disliked the film, a wrinkle that only amplified curiosity. A later HBO Max window is still expected, but for now PVOD is the main event — and Pattinson’s face will be back in front of the same audiences when Dune: Part Three arrives in December.
