The King Returns: What to Expect From Godzilla Minus Zero This Weekend

When Godzilla Minus One arrived in 2023, few people outside Japan expected a modestly budgeted monster film to become a global talking point. It did, and it even won an Academy Award for its visual effects. Now director Takashi Yamazaki is back with Godzilla Minus Zero, and North American audiences will not have to wait long. The film opens in theaters there on Friday, November 6, just days after its Japanese premiere.

The timing is part of the story. The Japanese release fell on November 3, known to fans as Godzilla Day because the original film debuted on that date in 1954. Releasing a Japanese Godzilla film almost simultaneously on both sides of the Pacific is new for the series, and it shows how much the previous film changed the franchise’s standing abroad.

Plot details remain scarce, but the main couple from Minus One return, played again by Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe. Yamazaki once more directs, writes and supervises the effects. The studio is clearly aiming for the biggest screens, as the film was shot for IMAX. Early critical reactions after festival screenings in New York and London have been very positive.

If you want the full picture, including the distributor, the running time and the rating, this Godzilla Minus Zero release guide covers it well.

In our directory, this is the cinema recommendation of the week. What made the last film special was its human core, a story about guilt and rebuilding that happened to include a giant monster. If the sequel keeps that emotional weight while going bigger on spectacle, it could be one of the most satisfying trips to the cinema this autumn. Just note that it is not aimed at young children.
