Zombie stories have a habit of returning every autumn, and this year one of the more unusual entries comes from Spain. Apocalypse Z: New World continues the story that began with The Beginning of the End, and it has landed on Prime Video right in time for the Halloween weekend. For anyone building a seasonal watchlist, it deserves a spot near the top.
The premise turns the classic safe-haven idea around. Survivors have found refuge on the Canary Islands, the last place in Europe free of the infection. Safety, however, comes at a price. Supplies are running out, and the only way to restock is a dangerous trip back to the mainland, where the infected still dominate the streets. What follows is a tense mission in which loyalty and survival pull in different directions.
The franchise has a solid foundation, too. It is based on the novels of Galician writer Manel Loureiro, whose books became bestsellers in Spain years before streaming services showed interest. That literary origin gives the films a longer story arc than many one-off horror releases, and it leaves room for future chapters.
Visually, the setting is a welcome change. Volcanic coastlines, bright sun and open Atlantic water make an odd but striking backdrop for an apocalypse, and the contrast between peaceful islands and a ruined continent gives the series its own identity. Some viewers will notice parallels to other recent island-based survival stories, which only adds to the conversation around it.
If you want a fuller look at the plot, the source material and why it makes such an easy double feature with the first film, the detailed Apocalypse Z: New World preview covers it well.
Our directory recommends it for anyone who prefers their Halloween scares with a European flavour, a bit of grit and a surprisingly sunny setting.
