For more than ten years, fans of the Avatar universe have wondered what would come after Korra. The answer, now streaming on Paramount+, is bolder than many expected. Avatar: Seven Havens, from original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, takes the franchise’s most comforting idea, that the Avatar brings balance and hope, and flips it on its head.
In this new chapter, the world has already suffered a catastrophe. Storms and sandstorms tear across what remains, and the survivors living behind the walls of the Seven Havens blame the Avatar for their misery. So when a young Earthbender named Pavi learns that she is the next Avatar, it is less a calling than a death sentence. She becomes a target for humans and spirits alike, which gives the series an urgency the earlier shows only reached in their later seasons.
The emotional core looks promising too. Pavi finds a long-lost twin sister, Nisha, and an Airbender named Jae who becomes her friend and teacher. Their search for the truth about the twins’ origins sets up a mystery that can carry a whole Book, and the first one is fittingly titled “Survival”. Of course there is an animal companion as well, a cat-monkey named Geet, voiced by franchise regular Dee Bradley Baker.
The voice cast is largely new, led by Saheli Khan as Pavi, and that fresh sound suits a story about a broken world starting over. A detailed look at the premiere, the characters and what the first episodes reveal can be found in this Seven Havens overview.
Our directory verdict: longtime fans should not expect a nostalgia trip. This is a darker, braver take on the legend, and that may be exactly why it works.
