Psycho Mantis’ charisma was unlike anything else I had seen at the time it came out in 1998; above all else, he effectively broke the fourth wall. Sure, adventure games and other games had done this, but it was a stark contrast to the rest of the game, which takes itself seriously for the most part. This was important because whereas all the other characters were reflections of Snake, Psycho Mantis was also a reflection on the player and their ability to solve puzzles and be creative.
